S2

Style System 2, or S2, is LiveJournal's current style system. S2 boasts an easy-to-use "wizard" interface, which allows users to achieve most of the common customizations (such as customizing the text of comment links and adding header or background images) without having to be familiar with coding languages. Users with Paid accounts are also able to achieve extensive customizations not possible in S1 using S2's LiveJournal-specific programming language.

S2 is the default style system for new users.

Layer System

S2 styles are a composite of several different layers: layout layers, theme layers, user layers, and other layers used to localize time /date stamps and in some cases, the language of the navigational links.

S2 Styles

There is a large selection of different styles available in S2 (over twice as many as available in S1), though access to some styles is restricted to users of certain account levels. Plus users have access to the restricted "Component" and "Expressive" styles while Paid and Permanent account users have access to both of these styles and also "The Boxer".

The default style for S2 is "Flexible Squares".
