Overrides

Override codes can be used in S1 to customize journal layouts. Unlike custom styles, overrides can be used by all account levels.

Overrides are used to completely replace a certain portion of a system style's code with code of the user's choice. However, overrides can only be used on certain portions of a style, so it is not possible to create a complete custom style with them.

Overrides are rarely used now because S2 has become more established and S1 is not fully compatible with some new features, such as tags. However, they do have the benefit of greater flexibility for free users than the S2 customization wizard.

The [profile for HowTo]HowTo journal and the S1 FAQ category contain examples of overrides for some common customizations. At one time, one-on-one assistance with overrides and custom styles was available through the Customization support category, but this level of assistance could not be maintained as the LiveJournal userbase grew.

Volunteers with the supportviewinternal or supporthelp priv can view users' override codes.
