No matter what you think of a user's request, answer it with the respect you'd want if you had asked it. If you can't do that, do not touch the request in any way. You are always free to ignore requests that you dislike. Even in discussions outside of official Support channels or communities, don't ridicule questions.

Be courteous toward other volunteers. If you have a question to ask, speak respectfully towards the volunteers who will be answering. If someone offends you, contact that person or the admins about it privately rather than starting a flamewar. Most problems are caused by misunderstandings that can be sorted out if everyone just discusses the issue calmly. Make corrections privately. Don't ridicule answers.

Specific policies:

  • Don't lie to users. There shouldn't be any situation that requires you to lie to a user. You can simplify, as many users do not need full details, but be honest.
  • Don't tell users to e-mail other specific users unless it's about contacting a community's maintainer to deal with community issues. People do not like it when they are annoyed by someone and that person tells them Support told them to do so.
  • Do not include information that is completely irrelevant to the request. You can justify including instructions on using the lj-cut tag when explaining how to post pictures. But don't answer a how to validate question with: "And I noticed that your journal has really poor contrast and you can modify your colors by doing foo."
